An elected Dutton Liberal Government will commit $6.2 million to bolster the Newcastle headspace centre with additional mental health support workers.

Liberal candidate for Newcastle, Assari McPhee, said this commitment will expand access, including through outreach activities, reduce wait times for accessing help, and ensure young people can receive the mental health support they need.

“There are few things more important than increasing mental health support for the community,” Mr McPhee said.

“I have listened to local families about the need for more investment and we have responded.”

Shadow Minister for Health and Aged Care, Senator the Hon Anne Ruston, said this commitment follows three years of Labor neglect.

“Bolstering the Newcastle headspace centre is part of our $9.4 billion healthcare package which includes increasing Medicare and mental health funding, after Labor ripped away affordable mental health support from more than 372,000 Australians,” Senator Ruston said.

“The Liberals will also double the number of Medicare-subsidised mental health sessions, from 10 to 20, on a permanent basis.”

“Labor’s cost of living crisis has forced locals to delay mental health support,” Mr McPhee added.

“Too many people are making tough decisions just to stay afloat.”

“The Liberals’ plan will deliver immediate cost of living relief by halving the fuel tax, saving 25 cents every litre.”

“We will deliver low inflation, up to $1,200 of tax relief for most working Australians, cheaper energy, and affordable housing.”

“Families in Newcastle simply can’t afford three more years of Labor.”

This commitment is part of the Liberals’ plan to get Australia back on track.
