Service NSW will soon take on the new role of cost of living cop on the beat, actively searching for better energy deals for consumers, which could help a typical household save more than $1000 a year on their bills.
In what will be a major shakeup for electricity retailers, consumers will soon be able to quickly change electricity deals via Service NSW’s new free ‘One-Click Energy Switch’.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the cost of living measure will be funded in next week’s NSW Budget 2018.
“One-Click Energy Switch will not only find you a cheaper energy bill, it will allow you to change your provider with a click of a mouse or a quick chat with our Service NSW staff,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“We know cost of living pressures are a challenge for many families and individuals and we are doing everything we can to help.”
Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said: “Navigating the list of energy providers can be a complicated task and this new tool will make the process simpler and easier.
“Measures such as this are only possible due to the NSW Liberals & Nationals strong financial management.”
Minister for Finance, Services and Property Victor Dominello said the new service would be far more convenient than a simple comparison website.
“Service NSW will check your usage through your energy bill, search the market for available plans and if you can save money, then we will help you change providers,” Mr Dominello said.
“We want NSW customers to feel empowered to drive down the price of their bills by switching to the best deal available and that’s what this initiative will do.”
Minister for Resources, Energy and Utilities Don Harwin said: “I am calling on all energy retailers operating in NSW to get on board with this excellent initiative.
“This will encourage greater competition in the retail electricity market by ensuring small and big retailers can compete on equal terms.”
Service NSW will pilot the new service in coming months across Service Centres in Wynyard, Lismore, Parramatta, Taree and Wetherill Park, with a wider State rollout later this year.
The NSW Government earlier this month announced that Service NSW Centres will become one-stop shops for NSW Government cost of living support, providing more people access to hip pocket measures such as free car registration, Active Kids Rebates and lower CTP insurance.
Today’s announcement also follows the NSW Government’s energy affordability package announced in September 2017 which includes:
