More than $2.6 billion over the next four years will be allocated for road projects across Western and South West Sydney, including $100 million for upgrading Henry Lawson Drive.
The multi-billion dollar allocation has been set aside for work associated with key projects, with more than $780 million to be spent in 2018-19.
The funding covers planning and construction for works on Bringelly Road, The Northern Road and Campbelltown Road as well as an allocation for the $470 million M4 Smart Motorway.
NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the 2018-19 Budget was about investing in projects that uplift communities and the economy.
“These projects will improve traffic flow and road safety and boost productivity across Western Sydney which is great for people who live in this booming part of our great city,” Mr Perrottet said.
“You cannot repair the road network if you have not repaired the Budget and since 2011 we have cleaned up the mess Labor left and are seeing results.”
“With this funding the work to make one of the city’s most important arterial roads flow more freely will begin.”
Minister for Roads Melinda Pavey said Henry Lawson Drive between the M5 at Milperra and the Hume Highway at Lansdowne is generally one lane in each direction and experiences significant congestion during peak hours.
“The first stage involves widening Henry Lawson Drive from two lanes to four lanes, for 2.2 kilometres between Milperra Road and the M5 Motorway, including intersection upgrades and bridge work,“ said Mrs Pavey.
“Henry Lawson Drive is a strategic route near the M5 Motorway making this announcement very good news for the local community who tackle high traffic volumes and congestion on a daily basis.
“The project will play a key role in facilitating growth along the corridor including the proposed redevelopment of the Bankstown Airport Precinct.
This project will expand traffic capacity by increasing the number of lanes, improving traffic flow, travel times and safety for all road users.”
Local MP Glenn Brookes said the funding for Henry Lawson Drive was a game changer for the community.
“Local residents will welcome this announcement which will ease congestion for motorists who rely on Henry Lawson Drive every day, helping to get people home safer and sooner, and creating opportunities for businesses.”
“I have advocated for these upgrades on behalf of my community and it is great to see this Government getting on with the job and delivering for the East Hills community.”
“This upgrade has been needed for a number of years and I am proud to be part of the Liberals and Nationals Government that is delivering it.”
