An elected Dutton Liberal Government will commit $186,000 annually, for the next four years, to support the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway in Concord West in recognition of its significance as a national site of remembrance, veteran community connection, and education.

The Memorial Walkway is the only memorial in Australia dedicated to telling the story of Kokoda.

This commitment will ensure the long-term viability of the Memorial Walkway which, since 1996, has commemorated the sacrifices made during the Kokoda campaign and serves as an enduring link between all Australians past and present.

Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Barnaby Joyce, said that “Australian forces were the first to repel the Japanese attack. It is incumbent on us to remember the sacrifice and success of this incredible effort. This is a rightfully bipartisan view of something that should never be forgotten in the annals of our nation’s history”.

Liberal candidate for Reid, Grange Chung, said the Walkway is a permanent reminder of the sacrifices that have been made for the freedoms we all enjoy today.

“This commitment to the Memorial Walkway affirms the importance of sharing our history and instilling the values of service, resilience, and mateship amongst our young people,” Mr Chung said.

“I’m proud to fight for our local heritage and for the volunteers, RSL branches, and community groups who maintain and elevate the Memorial Walkway throughout the year.”

Senator for New South Wales, Dave Sharma, said the Memorial Walkway is the living legacy of courage, sacrifice and national identity of all who served in the Kokoda campaign.

“With more than 150,000 visitors annually, and thousands of school students participating in its educational programs, the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway plays a crucial role in keeping the ANZAC spirit alive.”

“The Coalition has a proud history of supporting veterans and preserving our history and are committed to ensuring this national treasure receives the support it deserves.”
