More people in Tweed Heads have a safe place to call home thanks to a $12 million investment by the NSW Government that will provide 40 new social housing dwellings in the region.

Member for Tweed Geoff Provest said the new seven-storey building at Boyd Street was important to address housing needs in the flood-affected region.

“This development is a crucial addition to help people in need of housing get the security they deserve to secure a brighter future,” Mr Provest said.

“Projects like this are vital to ensure that housing supply is addressed with the inevitable increase in population.

“It has delivered 64 construction jobs to local tradespeople, and will house more than 60 people in need of housing in our community.”

The new complex is built on a previously unoccupied site, and will consist of 24 two-bedroom and 16 one-bedroom social housing units, including four units adaptable for the needs of people with a disability.

Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones said the dwellings will allow some of our most vulnerable a safe place to call home.

“We know that stable accommodation and access to wrap-around services are key to provide people with the support they need to thrive,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.

“These brand-new properties will provide affordable accommodation for those who need it most in the community, including people with disability.”

Minister for Planning and Minister for Homes Anthony Roberts said the new development will address the call from the regional council for more government support to increase housing in the region.

“In 2015, Tweed Shire Council was one of the first local governments to adopt a policy to address homelessness,” Mr Roberts said.

“Most of the current social housing waitlist in this region is calling for smaller density housing close to transport and services. This development will fulfil this criteria.”

The development is located close to the Tweed CBD, as well as both Coolangatta and Kirra Beaches over the Queensland border, which both serves residents’ needs and facilitates a comfortable lifestyle.
